On the 13th November Her Majesty was
pleased to promote Lieutenant and Adjutant 3. It.
Hartnell to the rank of Captain in succession to
Captain Burkinyoung such promotion to date from
31st October 1874; Captain Hartnell, however, continued
to perform the duties of Adjutant until the 5th January
1875, and on the 16th January in that year the
following Regimental Order was issued by Lieut Col.
Godman: "Captain J. H. Hartnell having in promotion
resigned the Adjutancy Lieut Col. Godman takes this
opportunity of thanking him for the able assistance he
has at all times afforded him and of expressing his
entire satisfaction of the zealous and efficient manner
in which he has discharged the onerous and
responsible duties of Adjutant.
On the 24th and 25th June the
Regiment marched from Dublin to the Curragh, 4
Troops being under canvas in Donnelly's Hollow
and 4 Troops in Huts in K. Lines. The
Depot went to Cahir
On the 21st July the Officers and
30 men each of the 3rd and 5th Dragoon Guards
were ordered to parade for the purpose of jumping befor
Brigadier General Seymour C.B. the artificial banks
and fences which had been constructed in Donnelly's
Hollow
The two Regiments had gone once round
over the jumps, but the second time the horse ridden
by Captain F. M. Clarke having kneed the large
bank, turned completely over, and, falling on his
rider, 50 crushed him that he died on the spot;
his body was carried direct to Crolonstown House
the residence of General Seymour, where it remained
until the 23rd July when it was conveyed to
Newbridge Station; the funeral procession was attended
by General Seymour, and the whole of the Cavalry
at The Curragh, consisting of the 3rd Dragoon Tuards
under the command of Colonel J. R.S. Sayer, C.B.
and the 5th Dragoon Guards, Officers from every
Corps in Camp alos attended; on arriving at
Dublin the remains were met at King's Bridge
Station by an Escort of the 4th Dragoon Guards
and several Officers of that Corps who escorted them,
in funeral procession to the North Wall, where
