HISTORY OF CALVARY EPISCOPAL CHURCH Not a great deal is known about the events leading up to the founding of the church. Among the papers of Judge James Boisseau was found the following: "Sabbath Evening Nov. 22nd 1846 Attended today the consecration of the new Episcopal Church at Dinwiddie C.H., which service was duly performed by Bishop Johns, giving it the name of Calvary Church. The Rt. Rev. Gentleman preached a very appropriate and highly interesting sermon from 2d Chronicles Vii:5. 'The King and all the people dedicated the House of God &c&c.'“ signed-James Boisseau The first recorded baptism in Calvary Episcopal Church was that of John Ambler Smith, "son of Dr. Harvie Smith and Ann his wife," on June 25, 1848. The first communicant listed for Calvary Episcopal Church was Mrs. Josephine Strachan, April, 1847 who later removed to Petersurg. Most weddings and funerals appear to have been performed in homes in 19th century Dinwiddie. The first wedding recorded as having been performed in the church was that of Joshua Pretlow to Ann Elizabeth Butler, on February 22, 1863. The "Sunday Communion Offering" for December 1, 1862 at Calvary Episcopal Church was $17.55. The combined offering of Sapony and Calvary Churches on Sunday May 13, 1858 was $29.61. Report to the Diocesan Council of 1863 showed 35 communicants. ’ ‘L |
