quarterly meetings is good, and the reports sent in are, in almost every
case, most encouraging.
Great interest is shown in every development
of the Temperance cause, such as attendance at Brewster Sessions, work
among factory girls, Help and Hope Bands, distribution of Temperance
literature, Police-court work, which are actively maintained
by the
Branches.
G. E. BoarpMan, Hon. Secretary.
In presenting the 4th Annual Report we record three interesting
conferences have been held.
One was held at Devonport, one at Blackhill, Exmouth, and one
at Tavistock.
The same number of Committee meetings have been
held, and we hope that during the coming year the results of those
meetings will be felt in the increase of work.
We regret very much that we have to report a decrease in member-
ship—not large.
The loss is 48. It is explained by the lapse of Tiver-
ton and Torrington, which branches between them had 80 members.
The branches in the County are all alive, and in nearly every case
are doing more active work than ever.

have made
it a
rule that we should have a written or verbal report from each Branch
of the Union at each Union meeting. We find this gives much interest

We have held our quarterly
meetings regularly, and have
endeavoured to introduce subjects of interest beyond the ordinary
routine of business.
We have had an address explaining the new
Licensing Act, and the evil of Mr. Butcher’s Liquor Traffickers’ Com-
pensation Bill has been brought before one of our meetings, and our
year of progressive work.
The Branches seem alive to the possibilities
for help which the Union and its united meetings afford.

Much interest has been taken in the barmaid question.
At Ipswich a canvass was taken of the number of girls employed as
barmaids.
At Norwich a memorial containing 2,263 signatures was presented
to the magistrates at Brewster Sessions.
At Felixstowe 770 ratepayers
signed the petition against the system, and New Walsham obtained 800
names.»
Besides public and drawing-room meetings, Temperance
The Annual Business Meeting was held on February 17th, at
Poole. All Officers except the Treasurer were re-elected.
The report
of the year’s work was encouraging, and showed an increase in the
membership.
The Quarterly Council meetings were held at Blandford,
Bridport, and Swanage, very well attended public meetings taking place
in the evening.
The Union numbers eight branches, and Poole and Parkstone
each have a flourishing Y branch.
Temperance meetings have been
held in many of the scattered villages and interest aroused.

We have an increase of membership, also every Branch, besides
carrying on its own special work, has helped in the Brewster Sessions.

new licences, and Cowes, Newport, Isle of Wight.
Petitions against the employment of barmaids were sent to the
magistrates by seven Branches.
