and in all the principal places, already occupied by other Temperance

UNION.
_ Although not yet one year old, our Union is vigorous and enter-
prising. At our first annual public meeting we had a magnificent
exposition of the changes wrought by the Licensing Act of 1902 in
the licensing system of England, by C. L. Rothera, ‘Esq., of Notting-
ham.
A publican was present.
He said to a gentleman near him:
‘‘Is there any printed matter Mr. Rothera has put his name to?
I
should like to read it.”
The Melton Mowbray Branch had become languishing and dis-
organized, but by the visits cf the Union officials and friends, renewed
enthusiasm has been enkindled, a fresh staff has been appointed and
there is much hope for its future in that important hunting centre. Our
Branches are busily working for the bazaar in July, at Higham Hall.

The quarterly conferences are being regularly held and well
attended, and there is a growing and general interest in the affairs both
of the National Association and the whole Temperance world. During
the year our special work has been to engage Miss Staveley for several
months to explore the whole county with a view to extending our work
and increasing our Branches.

_ This Union has held two committee meetings during the year
besides its Annual Council for the election of officers and of its three
representatives for the N.E.C.
Each gathering was preceded by a
devotional meeting, at which inspiring addresses were given by different
members.
