As the more general
er 1, it is encouraging to know that there
this evi
ment will help to remedy Lab
i$ a great increase all over the country
in the consumption of grains and
pulse, and that fresh fruit is being largel
y used.
It is also a good sign
of the times that wholemeal bread, oatme
al porridge, beans, etc., can
now be obtained at most of the cheap
cafés and restaurants, which are
successfully competing with licensed
houses.
Owing to important business engagement
s, the Superintendent has
only been able to speak at B.W.T.A.
and I.0.G.T. meetings in Wales,
A lantern lecture was given at the
Drill Hall, Summerhill, entitled
“ Harvest Thanksgiving,” showing that
true harvest thanksgiving is to
utilize the kindly fruits of the earth for
the benefit of mankind, instead
of deteriorating wheat and other grains
into white starchy foods which
do not nourish properly, and degrading
them into alcoholic stimulants
which poison and destroy.
Literature on Temperance and Food Refor
m has been distributed
by the Superintendent whilst travelling
about, and discussions have
thus been aroused on that important subje
ct on railways and on steam-
boats, and a great deal of information
been thus disseminated.
Leaf-
lets have also been given at suppers organ
ized by Temperance societies,
The Leicester B.W.T.A. have directed
especial attention to the
question of Food Reform, and have arran
ged a cookery demonstration
illustrating these principles, at Hinckley.
The Secretary of the Hastings B,W.T.A.
reports from her own
personal experience that, with fruit
and a vegetarian diet, alcohol is
quite out of the question—she never think
s of it.
The Manchester W.C.T.U. report that
they are using more fruit at
the Grove Retreat for Inebriate
Women, and that Mrs. Harrison,
Member of the Executive of the Vegetarian
Society, is giving a cookery
lecture there.
The Exmouth B.W.T.A. have arranged
a Food Reform supper to
an I.0.G.T, Lodge, and the Wolverhampto
n B.W.T.A. are arranging
for one next season.
The Southport B.W.T.A. report that they
co-operate with the local
Vegetarian Society, and that they alway
s have a meeting during the
session devoted to fruit subjects.
In Liverpool and Birmingham the
Vegetarian societies have directed the atten
tion of Temperance organ-
izations to its importance.
Miss Nicholson, Secretary of the Vegetarian
Federal Union and
the London Vegetarian Association, has
arranged meetings in connec-
tion with N.B.W.T.A. and other Temperan
ce societies.
The Vegetarian Society entertained the A.E.I
. during its meetings
at Manchester, and have circulated hundr
eds of their penny pamphlet
leaflets, “‘ The Remedy for the Drink Curse
.”
Mr. Sydney Beard states that the “Order
has constantly sought to show Temperance workers of the Golden Age ”
that Dietetic Reform
is the most important means of combating Natio
nal Intemperance,
During the past year there has been such a
large demand for their
official pamphlet, “The Drink Problem, and
how to Solve it,” that they
have been obliged
to print a third edition.
The pressing problem of the day is the maintenanc
e of industrial
